Learning to Play

Children from Y2 upwards can learn an instrument through our Peripatetic Teachers that come into school weekly. Parents can sign up through the Music For Schools company and pay for either individual or group lessons, which take place during school time.

Many pupils take graded exams through this system which is a great achievement and celebrated with the school during our assemblies. Children have the opportunity to perform for audiences as part of assemblies and music celebration afternoons.

Children in year 6 ALL have the opportunity to learn an instrument to form a ‘Class Band’. Children can chose from a trumpet, clarinet or trombone, and they take part in a weekly, whole class music lesson with our specialist music teacher Mrs Powlson.

Children are loaned their instrument for the year free of charge, and are responsible for ensuring they practise frequently at home, and bring their instrument to school for each lesson. As well as performing as a band within school to parents and at music celebration afternoons, our school band also regularly perform at the Royal Cheshire Show, and have also played at the Halle.

The School Choir

We are incredibly proud of our school choir. Children at school can join the choir when they reach year 4 and weekly sessions take place after school each week. Sessions are led by our wonderful singing teacher, Mrs Lord.

The choir have regular opportunities to perform to an audience within school at events such as Mince Pie Afternoon, Hot Cross Bun Afternoon and they are instrumental to the success of our end of year performance. The choir also have the opportunity to perform outside of school at events such as Comberfest and the event of the year ‘Young Voices’ at the Manchester Arena.

The Young Voices experience is not simply a children’s choir concert, these are the largest children’s choir concert’s in the world. Our choir performs alongside 5,000-8,000 other children as a single choir to capacity audiences of family and friends. Children taking part in YV have the opportunity to perform in some of the world’s greatest arenas alongside incredible artists.

To achieve this with all their school friends around them for support, it helps their self-belief, self-motivation, confidence, and ability to communicate as part of a team – which is invaluable! Add to this the numerous health benefits of singing in rehearsals, including breathing exercises to focus the mind!
