Gardening Club

At Comberbach Primary School, gardening has a long tradition. We are lucky to have a generous school garden with raised vegetable beds, soft fruit and fruit trees. In 2019 our PTA ‘Friends of Comberbach School’ used the funds they raised to purchase a large polytunnel, extending the growing season over most of the year.

In 2021, after an involuntary break in our gardening endeavours due to the Covid pandemic, a group of parent volunteers took on the garden afresh. They are now offering weekly gardening sessions for the children, sowing, planting, tending, harvesting and tasting fruit and vegetables as well as learning about composting, rainwater collection and local wildlife.

All our gardening is based on regenerative and organic principles and produce is shared with the whole school community or used to cook and bake in class.

Sessions are scheduled regularly for all year groups, so every child has the opportunity to participate and experience the garden through all seasons. In addition, both garden and polytunnel are used by the teachers for curriculum based activities, supporting science and technology lessons and especially our nursery children love spending much of their time in the garden exploring or watering the plants.

In 2023 our gardening team achieved the RHS School Gardening Award level 4 and in early 2024 we had the opportunity to extend our garden with a small orchard, planting apple, plum and pear trees in an exciting session with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust and Tarmac.

We have many plans for the future, including the creation of a wildlife pond and a sensory garden to enrich playtime.
