Modern Foreign Languages

Learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils, contributing to their personal development. Learning a modern foreign language supports development as a global citizen, as it helps the learner to appreciate the language, culture, religion and people of another country; appreciating their similarities and differences.

Furthermore, it helps pupils to develop their communication skills, including key skills of speaking and listening.  Learning another language is also proven to enhance knowledge of how their own language works.

We teach French at Comberbach Nursery and Primary School as pupils will have the opportunity to study the language at KS3 in our feeder high schools.

French is taught in Key Stage 2 for 30 minutes every week, using a progressive scheme by Kahoot. Teachers engage in CPD within the scheme to support their own knowledge and best practice. In response to the Ofsted review of MFL, we have selected a scheme with a focus on phonics in French. Pupils revisit prior learning each lesson, and always have the opportunity within each lesson to practise the four core components: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.
